Bill Nighy and Champions Visit Cape Town and Johannesburg

South Africa Project Visit

January saw Flying Start champions from around the business visit Comic Relief projects in Cape Town and Johannesburg. Eurofleet crew member Shaheen Yousif (left) said the
following about the trip:

Jan17 JNB“Thank you so much for a once in a life time chance to experience 3 amazing projects in JNB. It really was an
eye opening experience. It made me realise that people’s donations really do make life-changing differences.
Also it showed that it wouldn't be possible without the hard work and dedication of volunteers who help day in
 and day out.”

Shaheen and the other champions on the Johannesburg section of the trip visited the following Comic Relief projects:

Mother2Mothers, which aims to end mother-to-child HIV transmission and supports mothers through their pregnancy.

Fight with Insight – a hugely successful sports-based programme which engages vulnerable young people through boxing and martial arts and providing them with mentoring, educational and employment support.

Diepsloot Mountain Biking Academy – Despite the end of apartheid 20 years ago, the gap between rich and poor in South Africa has continued to widen. Diepsloot aims to engage disadvantage children and help them realise their potential – encouraging them to take part in mountain biking sessions followed by English and maths classes.

Cape Town

The other group of champions visited Comic Relief projects in Cape Town. Amongst the projects visited was Goedgedacht, who youDSC_8849 1 supported with gifts, clothes and toiletries in the IFCE Christmas Elves appeal. The Trust teach life skills to adults and children alike, with an on-site farm producing wine and oils.

They also visited Mother2Mothers and the Usiko Trust, which supports 250 young offenders in Western Cape, convicted or facing conviction, enabling them to attain skills which increase their employability or assist their return to school.

Champions were joined by British actor and Comic Relief ambassador Bill Nighy (right), who also attended the very first Flying Start visit back when the partnership began. Like the other champions, Bill really enjoyed the visit and loved seeing how the money raised on board and around the business really helps to make a difference to the projects and the lives of the people they help.
